Eucalyptus oil is obtained from the leaves and twigs of the tree by steam distillation.It is a colorless to pale yellow liquid with a strong camphoraceous, woody aroma. Its main constituent is cine-ole, a powerful expectorant.
Eucalyptus has been used for many years for respiratory complaints, such as asthma, colds and coughs. It has also been used to aid fevers, aching joints and for skin problems. It is sometimes used to flavor cough lozenges.
